There was a lot of momentum leading up to Tuesday’s election.
The two candidates vying to become New York’s governor have just about reached the campaign finish line.
By the end of Tuesday night, we should know if Democrat Kathy Hochul will continue as the state’s chief executive, or if Republican Lee Zeldin will take control on the second floor at the state Capitol.
Hochul has been serving as New York’s first female governor for the last 14 months. Now she hopes to become the first woman “elected” governor of New York.
However, she’ll have to get past Zeldin, who has been whittling away at a one-time commanding lead enjoyed by Hochul.
Zeldin has declared “losing is not an option.” He will find out Tuesday if losing is a “reality.”
Both candidates campaigned in New York City on Monday. Zeldin was in Brooklyn, continuing to hammer away on the issue of crime.
That seems to be the issue that has resonated with many New Yorkers.
That seems to be the issue that has created anxiety among Democrats, even in a deeply blue state.
Kathy Hochul dismisses Zeldin’s campaign strategy, calling it a ploy directly out of the Republican playbook.
Hochul says she understands the fear some people have, and she insists she is doing something about it.
That is not the way Lee Zeldin sees things.
“[Tuesday], voters go to the polls, and all across this state, New Yorkers of all walks of life, with a breaking point in this state, and a passion and a desire to save this state, head to the polls to be able to change the course of New York,” said Zeldin. “This current direction does not work. Kathy Hochul is not getting this job done.”
“I say check the source. He has been hyperventilating, trying to scare people,” said Hochul. “Legitimate media organizations have called him out for what he is doing…It’s not just here in New York. That has been the Republican playbook all across this country.”
