Owner cited for code violations in North Adams fire

Owner cited for code violations in North Adams fire. Police believe it was accidental in nature.

The owner of an abandoned North Adams factory that caught fire last month has been cited for code violations.

The fire took place at the former MacDermid Graphic Arts factory.

The Division of Fire Services said it cited the owner for failing to install an approved lock box at the gate for fire department emergency access, failing to get a new permit when the building was occupied during unsanctioned work and not obtaining a work permit for cutting and grinding metal operations within the structure. Each citation carries a $100 fine.

Investigators think the fire started in the center of the structure. There is no evidence that it was intentionally set, they said.

The fire canceled classes at two schools nearby and resulted in a public health advisory last month, telling people with breathing issues to stay inside.

No one was hurt, firefighters said.

The building was not a total loss. The cause is under investigation.

The Berkshire Eagle was first to report the story.
