Parking lot attacks leave some downtown Albany workers on edge

Workers in and around downtown Albany are now being asked to stay vigilant after a number of attacks reported at parking lots in the area.

Workers in and around downtown Albany are now being asked to stay vigilant after a number of attacks reported at parking lots in the area.

The Public Employees Federation, known as PEF, is one of the largest unions for New York state employees.

Their leadership said they have received several reports from workers concerning attacks in parking lots near their work. This includes in and around the parking garages called Pastures, Liberty, Green, East Garage and Sheridan Hollow.

It’s been frustrating trying to get the state to protect its workforce, according to PEF President Wayne Spence.

“We’ve said it gets dark. Can you put more lighting? Can you do certain things like what they do when you go to like a BJ’s or Costco’s or Home Depot? Have you ever seen those big lights in the system? Imagine something like that. We’ve offered those solutions, and no one has done it because it’s a deterrent,” Spence said.

PEF is offering a reminder that state troopers patrol the state offices on the Harriman Campus, Empire State Plaza, the surrounding state buildings, and nearly all OGS parking lots.
If you run into an emergency, always call 911, they said.
