Police: Schenectady man starved his 5-year-old daughter to death
Police officers remained at 203 Elmer Avenue, a two-family home, in Schenectady on Monday. There are remnants of crime scene tape around the front of the building.
Police got a call from a man at about 3 a.m. Sunday about a 5-year-old girl who was not conscious and not breathing.
“Officers and paramedics simultaneously arrived on scene,” said Schenectady Police Officer Nolan Carroll. “Sadly, they determined that the child was deceased.”
Police say it was her father who killed her by depriving her of food and water for days, from April 10 to April 14.
Robert Buskey, 33, is now facing charges: one count of manslaughter in the second degree and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
When asked about the girl’s mother, “I don’t have that answer for you right now. Like I stated at the beginning, this is a very active and ongoing investigation,” said Carroll.
“Our detectives concluded that there was enough evidence to charge the father with manslaughter, but there may or may not be additional charges coming in the future,” he said. “They are still actively ongoing and out in the field investigating this case.”
Buskey lived in the downstairs apartment, and he used to fight all the time with a woman there, a neighbor said.
What appears to be Buskey’s Facebook page shows that he has a younger son. Police confirmed that.
“He had another child, a 3-year-old child, who is safe with other family members at this time,” Carroll said.
In fact, according to court papers, one of the three endangering the welfare of a child charges is in connection with that young boy, for Buskey allegedly causing the death of the 5-year-old girl while the 3-year-old son was living in the same home.
Buskey is due back in court on Friday at 1:30 p.m., police said.
