The mission of the American Red Cross is to prevent and relieve suffering in times of need. It seems "time of need" is not only increasing in number, but it has also become one continuous humanitarian phenomenon.

Since the beginning of the year, Red Cross volunteers have responded to 41 home fires in the Capital Region. That’s more than one fire per day.

There have also been 11 local Red Cross volunteers dispatched to help with the California wildfires.
Separate and apart from the disaster response that is unpredictable and constant is the always existing need for blood donations, especially in January, when bad weather often prevents people from traveling to donation centers.
