Man shot, killed by troopers after opening fire on State Police barracks in Malta
State Police say a man was shot and killed outside the State Police barracks on Route 9 in Malta. The individual showed up to the barracks with a hunting-style rifle, firing off rounds at the barracks.
It happened just before 1:45 Wednesday afternoon.
Police said the man refused to drop his gun and then pointed his gun at police. Police then fired their weapons, hitting and killing the man. He is identified as David Levine, 69.
“Troopers instructed Mr. Levine to drop the firearm. Mr. Levine refused to follow multiple commands and aimed the gun in the direction of troopers, at which time the troopers fired their department issued firearms, fatally striking him,” said Major Gilroy of New York State Police.
The investigation is ongoing, police said. While they have body cam footage, they are not releasing it at this time, they said.
State Route 9 was closed between the State Route 67 traffic circle at Dunning Street and Saratoga Village Boulevard as police investigate. As of 6 p.m., the southbound side of Route 9 was back open.
There is currently no known threat to the public, police said.
