The Schoharie Central School District’s new mascot could soon be named “The Storm.” That’s raising some eyebrows in the community devastated by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.
Schoharie is one of the schools told to change its Indians mascot or face losing state funding.
“The Storm” got the most votes in a recent poll, which also included “The Hawks” and “The Coyotes.” However, it opens old wounds for some. It’s a symbol of the community’s strength and togetherness for others.
Superintendent David Blanchard was not available for an interview. However, he wrote, “The name Storm represents the strength and resilience of the school community, as the area has overcome several significant storms throughout its history.”

The school board will be presented with a resolution to officially decide on the new mascot on April 19.
