Police, firefighter respond to Shaker High for smoking Chromebook

Police, firefighter respond to Shaker High for smoking Chromebook. No word yet if it is linked to that viral challenge.

Officials at Shaker High School are investigating an incident in which a Chromebook began smoking in a classroom.

It happened at around 10 a.m. A hall monitor removed the Chromebook from the classroom and moved it outside, according to the Latham Fire Department.

The West Albany Fire Department’s hazardous materials team responded to contain the lithium ion battery that was overheating.

Several students were evaluated due to potential smoke exposure.

All students and staff were evacuated from the building, according to a statement from the district. Students and staff who were near the computer were checked out and no one was hurt.

After local fire departments, hazmat teams and police cleared the building, students and staff returned to the facility.

A spokeswoman for the district said the district is investigating whether it is related to the Chromebook Challenge. NewsChannel 13 reported last week on the viral video trend nationwide. in which students are sticking sharp objects into the charging ports of these computers, starting fires in some cases.
