Small plane lands on Thruway in Albany

The plane made an emergency landing after having an icing issue in the air. No injuries were reported from the incident.

A plane landed on the Thruway just before 1 p.m. on Friday. Part of the road was closed for a time. It has since reopened.

The 911 call came in at 12:40 Friday afternoon for a small plane that went down just before Exit 23 on the northbound side of Thruway.

That plane was on its way from Winnsboro, South Carolina to Bennington, Vt., according to State Police.

No injuries were reported according to State Police. However, the emergency landing causing severe traffic delays on I-87 with traffic backing up for about four miles.

That plane had three people on board with one pilot and two passengers. 

Crews removed the plane from the highway with a tow truck and crane.

State Police said Mechanical issues are being blamed in the landing. The Albany County Sheriff’s Office tells NewsChannel 13 that the plane was having an icing issue in the sky, forcing it to make an emergency landing.

“This is very, very unique for a plane to land on the Thruway successfully, not striking any vehicles, and nobody being injured.”
