State launches text message system for weather alerts - 333111
The state is launching a new emergency and weather alert system.
People can text their county of residence to 3-3-3-1-1-1 to begin receiving real-time alerts directly to their phones.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the new initiative on Thursday as part of the state’s Hurricane Preparedness Week recognition events.
The alert system is being run by the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. The service is available on all cellular carriers. Standard text messaging and data rates may apply.
In addition, the state has distributed $15 million in flood-related equipment to counties and conducted specialized training for state emergency operations personnel.
