18-year-old accused of having flare gun modified to fire bullets

Sheriff Craig Apple reports the illegally modified guns are increasing.

ALBANY, N.Y. (WNYT)- An 18-year-old was arrested after he was found to be in possession a flare gun modified to shoot live rounds, according to the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.

The teen attempted to get away from Sheriff’s while they were conducting routine proactive canvassing in the area of Lexington and Sheridan Avenues in Albany, Friday around 8:05 p.m. The flare gun contained a single .40 caliber round.

The Sheriff’s Office said there is an increase of teens found to be in possession of modified flare guns that are capable of discharging live rounds throughout New York State.

The 18-year-old was charged with:

  • Second degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • Third degree criminal possession of a weapon

He was taken to the Albany County Jail to await arraignment on Saturday, May 17.
