Tensions rise as New York corrections officers plan major rally

A comprehensive look at local, statewide and national news events is provided by the NewsChannel 13 Team, along with updates on sports and the weather forecast.

Hundreds of current and former correction officers from across New York State are set to rally at the State Capitol this morning, calling for major reforms in staffing, safety, and what they claim are unjust terminations.

Organized by correction officers, their families, and supporters, the rally aims to draw attention to deteriorating conditions inside the state’s correctional facilities. Among the chief concerns: rising violence, drug activity, and excessive mandatory overtime. Many officers also argue that the recent firing of 2,000 staff members — some on medical leave or workers’ compensation — was done without due process, creating unsafe conditions for both officers and inmates.

The protest also follows mounting tensions between local municipalities and Gov. Kathy Hochul’s executive order, which initially prevented rehiring officers dismissed after a recent strike. This week, counties including Rensselaer, Dutchess, and Oneida have openly defied the order, rehiring former officers without state-mandated retraining. County officials cite cost savings and the experience of these trained professionals as justification for their decision.

Governor Hochul has announced that the hiring restrictions will expire on April 9 and will not be renewed, though retraining will still be required. Critics argue that the ban was an overreach that punished workers protesting unsafe conditions.

The rally is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the State Capitol, with officers and supporters demanding immediate action from lawmakers.
