The potential closure of the Burdett Birth Center in Troy will affect many people, according to the Save Burdett Birth Center Coalition.
Former Burdett patients and health care workers were making their voices heard at a meeting Wednesday night. It was set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
Samaritan Hospital announced in June its labor and delivery unit would be closing, leaving Rensselaer County without a delivery unit. Residents have since been rallying together to stop the closure.
Many women walk or take the bus to get care, former Burdett workers said.
Taking away the birth center in a low-income community will put lives in danger, leaders said.
However, Samaritan Hospital said its hospitals are struggling to remain sustainable and viable, and this is necessary to ensure and preserve health care in Troy.
NewsChannel 13’s Tiffany Payton was attending the meeting. She will have a full report on what was said, Live at 9 on My4, Live at 11 on NewsChannel 13, and on WNYT.com.
