Union: Erie County prison in lockdown after inmates take over three dorms

An Erie County prison was locked down on Wednesday after inmates took over three dormitories, according to the union representing correction officers.

It happened at Collins Correctional Facility. All staff was removed from the dorms after the incident began, according to Jim Miller, spokesman for the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association.

Two of the dorms are still not under staff control, according to Miller. The third dorm is having inmates removed one by one until it is fully evacuated. It will then be restaffed.

No one was injured.

Emergency response teams have responded from nearby prisons to assist.

When contacted, the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision would only say that the facility was “locked down for the safety and security of the staff and incarcerated population. All staff and incarcerated individuals are accounted for and safe.”

The agency expects to release more information later in the day on Wednesday.
