Nearly 60 years after the first attempt to develop a vaccine, the FDA hopes to approve shots by next winter.

No RSV vaccine has ever been approved in the United States.

The FDA is reviewing two vaccines. Both are for people ages 60 and up.

The virus kills more than 10,000 adults 65 or older, and around 300 children under the age of five, every year.

RSV cases spiked dramatically in the United States earlier this winter, overwhelming emergency rooms and children’s hospitals.
