Use of psychedelics may have mental health benefits
Researchers are studying the use of psychedelics to treat mental health issues.
Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic have seen potential benefits in using psychedelics such as mushrooms and LSD to treat certain mental health issues.
A lot of the research on psychedelics has centered around anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
However, more research is starting to be done on how they could help with addiction.
Since psychedelics can alter your state of mind, doctors make sure the patient is in a comfortable and safe place. A monitor is also on site to assist.
The length of treatment depends on the type of psychedelic used and the needs of the patient.
Dr. Brian Barnett of the Cleveland Clinic said the drugs allow the brain to enter a state where it becomes more flexible and easier to learn new things.
“So it’s easier to make changes to how you view the world, how you view your interaction with the world, and also, it’s easier if you are in therapy to take what you are learning in therapy and apply it in your everyday life,” Barnett said.
While research is ongoing, there has been some movement with a psychedelic called MDMA, according to Barnett. It is expected to be approved by the FDA later this year to help treat post-traumatic stress disorder.
