You can not play basketball on the streets in the city of Troy. The city code states, "No person shall play ball in any of the streets of the City."
In a Finance and Special Meeting Thursday, May 19, Troy City leaders planned to vote on an amendment.
Troy City Council’s President Carmella Mantello says she was shocked when she recently learned of a resident receiving a citation from a code enforcement officer because her child was playing basketball outside their home.
"Here’s another issue. We’re trying to do everything humanly possible to keep our kids out of gangs, to keep our kids out of illegal activities and here’s this archaic law in the books," she said.
In the meeting, some council members brought up concerns about safety issues and noise disturbances.
No decision was made to amend the law. Instead, they motioned to send it back to legal, so they could come up with wording that is clear to the public.
