Rockefeller Christmas tree in route from Berkshire County
The 2024 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is on its way to midtown Manhattan.
The tree is coming from Massachusetts for the first time since 1959 – specifically West Stockbridge.
The blue spruce is 74 feet tall, 43 feet in diameter and weighs around 11 tons. It is around 70 years old and is on the property of the Albert family.
“It just happened to grow at the right spot,” said Earl Albert.
The family said they were approached in 2020 about the tree. When Shawn Albert’s mother-in-law died, the family took it as a sign from above because she was all about Christmas.
“She was a huge pillar in this community,” she said. “We weren’t able to have a funeral because it was COVID.”
Michael Albert said his father and uncle planted two trees on the property in honor of his two cousins. This tree is the one that survived.
“My dad took care of it – trimmed it a little bit,” he said.
The community is excited that their hometown will be represented at the Christmas celebration. They had a send off for the tree, when it was cut down on Thursday morning.
“We were so surprised when we found out the best-kept secret around – that our beautiful tree that we all pass by every year was going to be going down to Rockefeller Center. We are all thrilled,” said Caitlin Graham, a member of the West Stockbridge Singing Elves, who were there to send off the tree.
The tree will be decorated with 50,000 colorful LED lights.
It will be lit during the live broadcast of “Christmas in Rockefeller Center.” on Wednesday, Dec. 4. The tree will be on display until mid-January 2025.
