October 15 was “National White Cane Safety Day.”

Averill Park student Sammie went to each 4th grade class at West Sand Lake Elementary School to talk about using her white cane and how it helps her travel safely and independently around the school and her community.

After learning how to use the white cane correctly, students got to experience walking in the hallway, avoiding objects, and going up and down a ramp.

They also learned the braille alphabet and learned to write their names in braille.
