Hochul concerned about cell phone distractions in schools

Cell phones in schools are a major problem, Gov. Kathy Hochul said.

According to Hochul, 72% of teachers across the country report cell phones are a major distraction for students in the classroom.

The governor highlighted two new laws, while speaking at Guilderland High School on Monday. One keeps tech companies from selling personal information about children, the other forces social media companies to restrict addictive feeds on their platforms for people younger than 18.

“The result was clear. We overcame the intense lobbying and it passed almost unanimously. That’s what brings me here to today. That is our methodology. That’s how we can kickstart the conversation with a similarly thoughtful plan around cell phones in our schools,” Hochul said.

The governor launched the “Get Offline, Get Outside,” campaign this summer to promote physical and mental health, encouraging people to put the phones down and get outside. Fees at state pools are waived.
