A Tamarac Elementary School student will soon be a sheriff for a day, after winning an essay contest.

A Tamarac Elementary School student will soon be a sheriff for a day.

School resource officers in Rensselaer County put out a contest to all fifth graders.

The essay topic was what public safety means to them.

There were many great essays, the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office said, but the winner is Mallory Rowland.

She will soon spend a day with the sheriff’s department.
