Second person arrested in alleged assault of toddler at Clifton Park day care
A second person has been arrested in connection with the alleged assault of a child at a Clifton Park day care center.
State Police said Tia M. Sauvie, 33, of Johnsonville, witnessed an employee hitting a toddler at SmartEarly on Jan. 21. Suavie did not intervene or call for medical help.
That employee, 48-year-old Ballston Spa resident Amy J. Henniger, has been charged with second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
Sauvie was charged on Feb. 7 with endangering the welfare of a child. She was released on an appearance and due in Clifton Park Town Court on Feb. 12.
The child had bruises and scratches, but was not admitted to the hospital, according to police.
SmartEarly released a statement saying that both Henniger and Suavie were terminated. A third teacher who entered the room after the incident was placed on leave pending an investigation.
SmartEarly released a statement saying that its top priority is the safety and well-being of children in their care. They cited that video evidence was crucial in the investigation.
“It’s horrifying to think that without video proof, this behavior could have continued,” said John Miller, owner at SmartEarly, in a statement. “Parents trust us to protect their children, and we take that responsibility incredibly seriously. We will always work with law enforcement to ensure that anyone unfit for this profession is removed.”
