Tuesday is Primary Day, and one of the most high-profile races is for Albany County district attorney.

Incumbent David Soares is facing a challenge from defense attorney Lee Kindlon. This is a rematch from 12 years ago when Soares defeated Kindlon.

Soares is seeking a sixth term in office.

Soares has been criticized for giving himself a bonus of over $22,000 using state grant funds. He later paid back the money.

Kindlon said he his running to restore accountability to the office.

“This is the law, and if we can’t count on the senior-most law enforcement official in the county of Albany to follow the law, well that’s one of the reasons I got involved in this election was because of the complete lack of accountability in the district attorney’s office,” Kindlon said.

Soares has run on his opposition to bail reform and other crime policies that have been enacted by the Legislature in recent years.

“As you know, this is not just about electing your next district attorney. This is a race where we are commenting and we are letting our opinions be known about public safety, which I refer to as the gentle-parenting public safety that we currently have right now in New York state,” he said.

Both candidates have picked up key endorsements. Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan, Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and Assemblyman Phil Steck are backing Kindlon.

Soares has the support of Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple and labor groups.
